Planning a wedding can be hard! There is SO much inspiration out there. I’ve been loving how creative couples have been getting with their wedding themes. I’m a huge believer in creating a wedding vibe that is 1) fun, 2) unique, and 3) personal! The BEST wedding themes have been when the couple’s integrate a bit of themselves into the planning. Whether it be their personal interests, like reading, or what they love and consider to be their personal style, such as coachella! Below are just a few examples of some of the fun and creative wedding themes I’ve seen over the past few years
- A Coachella meets Gatsby theme
Natasha and Joe let me know they were planning a Coachella yet elegant wedding and I was SO excited! Natasha wore bold jewelry and accessories while the bridesmaids all wore funky different shades of purple. They also booked a venue that was near by a graffiti park, which played well with their theme. We did a lot of their portraits in that park! The rest of the day was pretty laid back- complete with glow sticks and cheesecake!
2. Never Never Land Theme
Another genius idea, Lindsey let me know the thought just came to her one day; we shall have a Peter Pan themed wedding! They loved idea of never growing up, which is how they wanted their love to live. It was done very tastefully too. The bridesmaids held lanterns instead of bouquets. Mark’s tie clip was of an arrow. The venue had delicate twinkle lights displayed. Their wedding cake had Wendy and Peter Pan silhouettes on top of it. Even Lindsey’s dress was reminiscent of Wendy Darling herself. Loved it!
3. Book and reading themed wedding
Emily and Matt actually had a “contest” once when they were still dating, of who could read a certain book the fastest. (I believe Emily won!). The couple both really enjoy reading. Their wedding was themed as such! Guests found their reception place cards just like they would in an old school library! Books were hanging from the trees, and were a great center piece for the reception tables as well.
4. Nautical Wedding
Marly and Maurice of course had a nautical wedding! With ties to the navy, it truly made sense! Their venue also had the Pacific Ocean as their backdrop, so it all came together wonderfully. Anchors away!
5. Funky Backyard Wedding
Justine and Dave had a perfectly laid back wedding. Their reception site was actually in Dave’s childhood backyard! To make it even better, they got married at the town hall building down the road, (where Dave claims he broke into a few times when he was younger). They then had a parade from the ceremony to the after party. Their favorite band played all night while guests played arcade games and were served delicious drinks. A few family friends dogs were also in attendance.
6. Great Gatsby Wedding
This wedding actually played perfectly with the venue! The Oviatt Penthouse is an art deco treasure trove in downtown LA. Filled with glitz and glam, it’d be a shame to NOT have a Gatsby themed wedding here! Barbara’s bridesmaids played well into the theme as well, with mix and matched gold sequined dresses!
7. Safari Glamping (Styled Shoot)
This styled shoot actually came about based on the venue as well. The San Diego Zoo Safari park was opening it’s new wedding venue and wanted to show case the possibilities that could be held there. We created a themed wedding that would fit in a glamping style in southern Africa.
8. Scottish Traditional Elopement
This wedding was perfect for so many reasons. Erin’s father’s side of the family is Scottish, and it has always been her DREAM to visit Scotland one day. When it was time for her and Michael to tie the knot, it was the perfect place. They found a cute and glamorous traditional hotel on the Isle of Skye to the vows. Erin wore her family’s tartan pattern for her shawl, and tied another tartan around her bouquet, which was also used for the hand fastening ceremony. Michael used traditional Scottish thistle for his boutonniere, which was also found in Erin’s bouquet. And whats an elopement in Scotland with out some Scottish whiskey!?
9. Laid back mountains wedding
Sometimes, letting the venue speak for itself and determine your wedding theme is the way too go! Jenny and Jacob picked a stunning venue an hour and a half outside of San Diego, up in the mountains, for their wedding location. The venue in the summer time is SO lush, that “greenery” was the obvious decor choice! They picked a simplistic style of greens and whites, with the bridal party in navy blue.
10. Industrial Modern Brewery Wedding
I loved this laid back brewery wedding! Kelly’s style was perfect, like out of a Madewell magazine! It was modern, but elegant. The flower crown was the perfect touch too! Their wedding was held in a brick walled back room of Mission Brewery in downtown San Diego. The only accents they really needed were a few succulents, and beer!
